Ok, it seems I found it.
Tim, some time ago you suggested that I set a link from the playlists directory in /var/lib/mpd to my NAS. This always worked like a charm. The last line from the startup log triggered me. I changed that link back to the original directory and its contents.
Et voilà, the update is successful.
I'm wondering why the log didn't contain any hint or information, but I'm happy that it worked now.
