Merely turning the GPIO buttons function "ON" does not affect the audio on my system. 

How do you have the GPIO pin mappings configured? Could it be you've chosen a pin which is used by your DAC board? (Note: I'm not the right person to ask about any aspect of the IQ-Audio seriies.)

Man, sometimes I am so brain dead.
I went to: https://pinout.xyz and remapped the buttons.

Everything works now.
