I've tried just now very quicklìy, having only one Pi and the PC available right now:
Moode > usb storage attached > turned on samba > browsed the network folder from windows
the Pi's folders were right there and I played from the PC a couple of tracks sourced from the usb storage attached to the Pi
it worked, no issues. took 1 minute
will try with another Pi
can the "host" (or I should say "server"?) Pi also play music on its own while another Pi ("client" ?) sources the music from it? or can it only perform one task at the time?
