[PROBLEM] Motu M4 audio quality issue

Hi all! I love the project and want to use it for all my Roon endpoints. I am running into an issue on my Motu m4 connected to a rpi3. It has distortion/static sounds during playback. To rule it out, I have used it directly on my mac without issue and tried Volumio, which seems to work with it correctly.  What settings or adjustments could I make to further troubleshoot the source of the issue?
