Thank you both so much for you replies and assistance. I have been spending some time trying each of the suggestions and they were both very helpful. I think you both are right, the experimentation I've done probably points to more towards my external disk requiring more power to spin up. Though I am not entirely sure why my external drive was detected before. I also just got a USB flash drive and tried plugging it in, and it was able to be autodetected. So, I will continue to use that.
