Thanks so much!  I also gave up on this method and used yours instead. Works great!  Guessing either things have changed in 7.1 or Apple_A1294 remotes have an issue with lircd?

@KmPan could you please share with us exactly which steps you took ?
as mentioned above I couldn't get irexec or irw to work but everything else is working fine, I was able to generate the configuration.

Irrecord sometimes generates lircd.conf file sometimes emplty. In that case irw , irexec won't output does not work.. I used this steps in the post to create remote control lircd.conf and rest of steps work as usual after that.

Updated the lirc setup guide. The setup process is a bit more straightforward and the irrecord utility seems to work out of the box now.

I have my moode streamer on RPi 3, allo boss as DAC, and using IR remote.
What do you mean by "adding an IR receiver to an allo boss dac"? The 2 are not linked I think.
Just like you, I can't imagine my moode without an IR remote. If you have unused buttons on the remote, you can link them to a number of playlists you create yourself. I have a remote button for jazz, another for hip-hop, another for classic.

Allo BOSS 2 DAC was not an over-the-counter-for-sale DAC in May 2018 yet.

Probably a very good question for... the 'Volumio environment' people.

My earlier reply was pointing out to your reference to a thread entry by @remy1961 from <(05-16-2018, 10:11 PM)> when the Allo Boss2 Player did not exist yet.
