Just found this thread. I have had similar experience - I put a USB wifi adapter on my MoOde because it is in a metal box. Had no issues until v8. After being powered off when I power on the USB wifi adapter is not activated. I have to remove the adapter and reinsert - then it will activate and all is well.
Have also experienceD that I cannot access from web browser - and have to either reboot or connect via terminal first, MPC PLAY, MPC PAUSE - then I can access from web browser.

Wifi adapters with RT5370 chips work. Not fast with Wireless N speed up to 150Mbps. They are nice, because they are plug and play for Windows and Linux and they are cheap. They are not as plentiful as in the past.

Thanks for the reply - like I mentioned the dongle has worked for the last 3 years - just since the 8.0 update has the failure to start occured - maybe OS related? For the moment I will just unplug and replug or add a crontab command to restart the dongle

Try the lsusb command. When the device is working, it should list the device name. From there it might be possible to look for issues with the adapter in RaspiOS support. When it's not working, I assume it doesn't show up in lsusb.
pi@moode:~ $ lsusb
