(This post was last modified: 05-29-2024, 09:05 AM by Obimann63.)
To introduce myself:
I’m Michael from Germany, 60 years old now and “freshly retired”
During the last months (now that I have much more time?) I became more and more aware, that we (all?) are surrounded by music all the time….but that the quality seemed to degrade over the decades….. and our way of listening.
Looks that music became kind of “24/7 interchangeable low quality life-soundtrack”.
I want to change that now for me and will concentrate more on quality (of the music itself, my way of listening and the equipment).
During my research for equipment I became aware of all the cool raspberry pi stuff…I never dealt with before.
So I dived into and decided building a decent machine, using moodeaudio.
The parts are ordered now and I’m kinda excited already!!!
It will be a setup from the “upper shelf” (after reading a lot in this forum and watching many yt videos, especially from Gabbster…..big thanks to him!!!)
It will be a Rpi 3b+, Ian Canada PurePi II, Fifo Pi Q7 II and a ProtoDAC, which I will build myself.
Of course I will share my experience with you!
Enjoy music, Life and wine…..take care

Guten Tag Kent
Yes indeed!…..I’d read a lot of posts here and every single one was friendly….unlike the posts in other forums. I think I will feel “home”….

Hi Tim
For decades I’m building my speakers myself….following different ideas from DIY forums from Germany. In the moment there is a set of 2,5 speakers playing (bass-reflex)….an unfinished project “surface wise”, still no veneer….no time until now, but that will change!!! (as a pensioner )
In my opinion they sound great.
My music-listening-setup UNTIL NOW is these speakers plus a Yamaha AV-Receiver.
But the new Streamer will get his own Amp: It came to my mind, that I still have a now 25 years old Sony TA-FB930R…he will be reactivated just for that purpose…..and then we will see!!
For the ProtoDAC I had to order all parts myself, as the kit isn’t shipped to Germany via EBay.
But that’s not a problem…. I have all the parts together, just waiting now.
Found the Z-foils, ordered the PCBs, also found a pair of Elna Silmic 1000uF/10VDC and a pair of Russian K77-1 (6,8uF/63VDC)……. enough room for tinkering…..I’m really excited!!!

Vintage Sony is great stuff. Remember their ES line from the 80's/90's? Wow :-)
With the IanCanada kit make sure to download the latest Gerber file from Mark.
Gerber zip file Rev E (currently supplied with kit)
Aux audio output pads removed, and the 5V/GND pads moved 2mm toward the PCB edge to allow a screw terminal.
I've been using modern chip amps with ProtoDAC and it's a match made in heaven for my ears :-) I recently replaced an SMSL chip amp with the new Fosi ZA3 2.1 amp. Speaks are vintage KEF Q60's from the early 90's with original, "aged" crossover caps lol, plus a nice HSU sub.

Aren't class D amplifiers amazing? I cut my eyeteeth on vacuum technology way back when the debate was raging over class AB1 vs class AB2 in audio service and purists insisted on class A room heaters, er, sorry, amplifiers. Gave up crafting my own when Dynakits showed up..
You guys keep pushing me closer and closer to obtaining a ProtoDAC so I don't feel left out.

Kent

Yes, the Rev E is the one I’ve ordered to print.
In the moment I let the Sony run without a source, just to check, if the capacitors might blow after several years without a job…seems ok!
Regarding vintage speakers: I’m dreaming of a pair of Rogers LS6. Me and my friend had the pleasure to hear them very often in the 80s…when we kinda “lived” in a little HiFi-Studio in our town. Never had the money to buy them…nowadays you still can get them as a high-level remake, but still very expensive.
No Sir, I will build my own…big fun!!!

I still can remember, that the Sony sounded great. The last use of it was about 6 or 8 years ago.
It seems that he just was waiting in the closet for this moment to become reactivated.
We will see…….

Michael
