I found nothing in the user manual.
I also tried the opposite: changing the volume from the IR remote. DAC display is of course changing but not the alsa mixer.
The mystery remains...

Right. Looks like the firmware in the DAC only updates its display via its IR remote.
Ask the manufacturer and provide your usage scenario. Maybe they will clear up the mystery.

Having a quick browse of the web and it appears the device can run in two different modes.
Does the volume behaviour change depending on the mode e.g. DAC or Pre-Amp

Be very careful and ensure your speakers/amp are set to a low volume before testing.

Thanks Steve but yes I did my tests in preamp mode.
Otherwise you don't even have volume info on DAC display since you can' t change it.
