Recently I was having issues with access to the USB SSD drive I had been running on my RPI4 with the current version of MoOde Player. I tried several different attempts at fixing it, including a few suggestions from the forum, and it started working; though I am not sure why. It was formatted to NTFS, I reformatted it to Ext4 and reloaded all my music (~11k songs). When everything was working I could write, delete, and make changes to the drive remotely using WinSCP.

Now I have a new issue that may be somehow related. When I play my music it sounds as though it is constantly being interrupted. It's hard to describe in writing, but it would play the music and it would sound as though there was a momentary interrupt (or skip in old LP nomenclature) which would happen every couple of seconds. I reformatted a USB stick drive to NTFS, loaded some music and it plays fine. I plug the SSD back in and it still has the same issue. I've verified there aren't any settings that are obvious that would mess it up and since the USB stick drive plays fine I do not believe it is the sound card that could be causing it (HiFiBerry DAC+ Pro). I also tried the other USB3 port to ensure it wasn't a port issue. Before I go into trying more in-depth troubleshooting, are there any suggestions as to what to check?

Is it possible that the Ext4 format is causing some issue, though it is a preferred format for RPI? Will setting up NTFS FUSE to run the SSD formatted to NTFS be a better solution? Also, will I reacquire my rights so I don't run into what I ran into before (unable to make any changes due to rights issues)?

Before I go doing something that will muddy the waters further, I am open to suggestions and or comments. Thanks

What make and model is the SSD?

The SSD is a Samsung T7 2TB. It's the same one I was using before I had the last issues and it's only been used for storing my music library. This isn't one that had an OS and was written to frequently.

I haven't received much response to this issue, but I do have an update and I'm hoping someone can comment on what the heck is going on.

I continued to try various ways of troubleshooting and isolating my problem. This includes reformatting the drive and changing the format to a couple of differing types (Ext4, exFat , Fat 32, NTFS, etc.) . Of these, the only one that would not allowed me to play my music files was the Ext4 format. The music continually breaks up as I mentioned above. The exFat, Fat32, & NTFS would not allow me privileges so that I can edit the files (rename/delete/add, etc.). I tried various 3rd party applications for either taking ownership of the drive but nothing worked (not allowed). I also tried a 4TB external HDD to ensure that I wasn't having drive issues. I ended with the same results. What I finally did was say "the hell with it", reformatted my drive to NTFS, and reloaded the music. I can now play my music without it breaking up. I just can't SSH into the drive to add or modify the files. I'll have to pull it to my PC for that. Oh well....

If there any comments or questions (other than am I an idiot) I will be happy to respond. It has to be something in the setup, but I just can't figure out what. One day it's working and then it's not. All my software is up to date. Including the extra software downloaded for using NTFS or allowing me to take control of the drive when it was formatted to Ext4.

Very odd. Is this a fresh 9.1.2 system?

Reboot and then post the contents of the startup log.

The log can be viewed via the SSH command moodeutl -l or downloaded via the Logs section in System Config, or via Menu, System info from any of the Config screens. The startup log will be at the end of System info output.

I did what you asked. What I have attached is a text file that contains the log with the NTFS HDD in the first half and the log with the Ext4 SSD attached in the second half. In case you wanted compare. If I could I would send an audio of what the audio sounds like. BTW, yes it is a fresh install of the latest MoOde Player.

Let me know if you get the attachment. I might have messed up.

Best to leave debug logging off unless explicitly requested. It makes the logs hard to read.

In any case I don't see anything suspicious in the logs. I have Ext4 NVMe drives Fat32 and Ext4 USB drives and no issues. It's a mystery to me what might be causing the audio glitches.

Maybe try a different USB cable to the drive?

I have a 1TB Samsung 980 Pro M.2 NVMe SSD drive mounted in an SSK USB3.2 enclosure. Linux reports the drive is formatted exFAT. This combo works a treat with moOde.

Besides the interconnecting USB cable you're using, I'm wondering about your SAMSUNG T7's controller. When I enter "SAMSUNG T7 USB issues" into my web browser I get back a ton of hits. You may want to dig into some of them.

Possible diagnostics regarding your interruptions:

1) See if MPD throws any underrun error messages during playback.

1) measure the read and write speeds for your drive to see if it's up to snuff. There are plenty of HowTo examples on the InterWeb™, almost all of which employ the Linux dd command.
