Hi everyone,

Been lurking here for a while, had an account a couple of years back that expired as I didn't post. So making up for that now.

I've been working with audio on Linux since 1997. At that point I was involved in a project to record and backhaul FM radio from around the world using ICOM PCR1000 receivers onto laptops running Red Hat 4.1. Long-time Linux users may recall the english.wav with Linus Torvalds saying how he pronounces it Wink

I do some music production based on my own guitar / bass / drum programming using Reaper, on Linux and Mac.

Some of us struggled with earlier efforts like the buggy Softlanding Linux System or even just boxes of 3.5-in diskettes from some rando at a local computer user group meeting. Slackware and RedHat were godsends.

I played with Minix a bit before that but it was more a teaching tool than a working tool. Sadly, Tannenbaum was on the wrong side of history regarding Linux.

It wasn't surprising how Linus pronounces Linux given the way his first name is pronounced in Finnish (a language I couldn't get to first base with, other than to order a beer (olut)!)

I envy folks like you and Tim who can play a musical instrument as well as listen to others play.

Cheers Kent. I was using Unix on "big iron" before Linux, and yes, installing Linux from stacks of floppy disks got old very, very quickly. I was glad to have networking, forget about audio ! Wink

Well, it was "mini iron" for me---Sun Microsystems, Apollo (um, Unix like, anyway), DEC---anything to get away from the bloated multiuser OSes on the "big iron" kept safely behind the counter. I started playing with Linux because I wanted to do things outside of work and couldn't afford even a used commercial Unix workstation.

Anyway, it's all about enjoying the sound on this forum!
