Deezer to shut down Deezer Connect – plea to keep it alive
#1
Exclamation
Just a heads-up to all moOde users relying on pleezer:

Deezer has announced it’s discontinuing the Deezer Connect protocol:

While the playback part of Connect has been spotty in Deezer’s official apps, remote control of third-party clients (like pleezer) has continued to work well. That’s why I’ve proposed a simple way for Deezer to keep the backend alive:

Quote:Let the apps act as controllers but not playback targets — no extra maintenance required, but it keeps pleezer and other integrations working.

Over 10,000 people have downloaded pleezer in the last 6 months. From what I can tell, many are using it with moOde or other streamer setups that benefit from:
  • External DACs (USB exclusive mode)
  • Headless Linux playback
  • Gapless playback
  • Integration into DIY systems
If you’d like to support continued development and compatibility, here’s how: Even if you don’t use Connect directly, keeping this protocol alive helps preserve Deezer as a viable source for open systems like moOde.

Seems crazy to me. Without a decent "connect" ecosystem, they'll never challenge the dominance of Spotify.
I don't actually use Deezer myself, but I'll upvote and comment anyway, just to keep the biodiversity.

ETA, OK, so I tried, but the register/login system also seems to be a bit wobbly and it tells me that my login information is incorrect when I'm choosing a password! Maybe they think they need to devote developer time exclusively to things like that.

EATA (edited again to add Wink ), Got my account working and have added likes to the positive comments.

It's a shame that this is happening. I just wrote on that discussion. Let's hope they change their mind.
A good Last.fm scrobbler solution for Moode here, docker image here

It's completely crazy that I subscribed to Deezer only because I tried the Moode and Pleaser combo and realized it was exactly what I needed. I think I've been trying for a couple of years to find an open-source solution that can run on a Raspberry Pi, supports USB DAC, and can be controlled from a native app. I finally find it, and what happens? The lunatics decide to shut down support just 10 days after I started using it. I don't think anything has made me this angry recently, but unfortunately, I don't think we'll be able to change that decision.
@roderickvd great piece of work, thanks!

Thanks for the kind words @marxovac.

Everyone, I don't know for how long, but Deezer may have resurrected Connect as an experimental opt-in feature. In the latest app, it's like before Connect came out of beta. Go to your account (profile picture) > settings (cogwheel) > Music > scroll down to "Deezer Lab" > enable "Remote Control".

That's interesting.

To reenable the Deezer Connect feature in moOde 9.3.4 use the command below.
Code:
# Enable the Deezer Connect feature
moodeutl -A add 64

# Example
pi@moode9:~ $ moodeutl -A add 64
Old bitmask 97207
New bitmask 97271
Enjoy the Music!

That’s pretty cool Tim that you can programmatically enable and disable such features.

OK, so with the Deezer Connect feature reenabled and my Deezer account info restored in the renderer, and with the Deezer Lab>Remote Control feature enabled in the Deezer app on my iPad, I seem to be streaming from them again.

Now I have to decide if I still want to let my Deezer Premium account expire at the end of the current billing period as I directed a week ago. Sigh.

Kent
