Solved: Failed to open "ALSA Default" (alsa); Failed to open ALSA device "_audioout"
#1
Hello,
I have the
Failed to open "ALSA Default" (alsa); Failed to open ALSA device "_audioout"
error when playing DSD files > 64 resolution;

RP3b+ + HIFIBERRY DAC+PRO, moode 7.2.1
all eq and camillaDSP are disabled.

in previous versions I had no problems,
I have found the cause of the  bug and a workardound:
in mpd.conf I have

audio_output {
type "alsa"
name "ALSA Default"
device "_audioout"
mixer_type "none"
dop "no"
}
changing device "_audioout" to device "hw:0,0"
solved the problem; unfortunately moode sets it again
to "_audioout" when saving mpd settings.

it remains to be seen why _audioout does not support
higher resolutions and/or how to memorize the setting
hw:0,0 from moode, so it is no changed anymore.

thanks

nice!
in the meanwhile,
since moode sets it again
to "_audioout" on reboot,
I solved by changing the file

/etc/alsa/conf.d/_audioout.conf

the row:
slave.pcm "_deviceout"    to    slave.pcm "hw:0,0"

Was this fixed? I am experiencing this in moode 7.4.1.

Whenever I try to play a DSD file, I get:

MPD error
Failed to open "ALSA Default" (alsa);
Error opening ALSO device
"_audioout"l snd_pcm_hw_params()
failed: Invalid argument

All EQs and crossfeed etc are off, everything else works fine. DSD did work before.

In Audio Config try setting ALSA output mode to Direct (hw).

Hey Tim,

That did the trick! Thanks!

I thought with the "no automatic conversion", it would output pure DSD, but it converted to PCM.

Greetings from India!

I am getting this error when I try to play anything..

Failed to open "ALSA Default" (alsa); Failed to open ALSA device "_audioout": No such file or directory

Also in MPD Config It shows 2 entries for my "Schiit Modi 3 DAC" and it says Device turned off or disconnected.
(Screen shot Attached)

Device is on and working. Just to verify I plugged the usb to my laptop (win10) and tested it with a few MP3/Flacs.

My Setup is Latest Moode update on Raspberry Pi 3+ with USB >> Schiit Modi 3 Multibit.

I have been using moode since I bought the DAC for a few years without such issues..

This issue cropped up 6 months back and I stopped using it. Now I just did a fresh install with the latest update it still happens.

The MPD Config message "Device turned off or disconnected." indicates Linux/ALSA did not successfully detect the USB audio device. If in fact the audio device is turned on then the USB implementation on the device is prolly not compatible with the USB audio driver in Linux kernel 5.4.y that moOde currently uses.
