[split] USB WiFi Adapter issues
#1
Just found this thread. I have had similar experience - I put a USB wifi adapter on my MoOde because it is in a metal box. Had no issues until v8. After being powered off when I power on the USB wifi adapter is not activated. I have to remove the adapter and reinsert - then it will activate and all is well.

Have also experienceD that I cannot access from web browser - and have to either reboot or connect via terminal first, MPC PLAY, MPC PAUSE - then I can access from web browser.

The last post to the thread https://moodeaudio.org/forum/showthread....+wierdness you posted in was over a year ago and it referenced an old version of moOde so it would prolly be best to split your post into a new thread so it will be easier to troubleshoot.

To start troubleshooting

- reboot
- post the startup log via SSH command

Code:
moodeutl -l

or use the DOWNLOAD button in Logs section of System Config, then cut/paste it

Tim,
thanks - here is the log from the last startup.  Again the wifi dongle failed to start - I unplugged and replugged and it started.

The log entry below indicates Linux did not recognize the adapter.

Code:
20230403 212538 worker: wlan0 adapter does not exist

A user named @MrEngMan had a website with drivers for a lot of "out-of-tree" WiFi adapters but I don't know if he still maintains it.

Wifi adapters with RT5370 chips work. Not fast with Wireless N speed up to 150Mbps. They are nice, because they are plug and play for Windows and Linux and they are cheap. They are not as plentiful as in the past.

Thanks for the reply - like I mentioned the dongle has worked for the last 3 years - just since the 8.0 update has the failure to start occured - maybe OS related?  For the moment I will just unplug and replug or add a crontab command to restart the dongle

Try the lsusb command. When the device is working, it should list the device name. From there it might be possible to look for issues with the adapter in RaspiOS support. When it's not working, I assume it doesn't show up in lsusb.

pi@moode:~ $ lsusb

Thanks - yes did this to identify the adapter type.  If its not working I can't connect so can't run the command.  Weird that this only recently started happening since v8.0

I don't mean to be rude but we're up to ten posts in this thread and we still don't know anything about your WiFi adapter.

hifinet should have stated his suggestion as an imperative "run lsusb and post the result".

In any case, all the recognition of a new USB device, its enumeration, the loading of an appropriate driver, and ultimately its presentation to moOde as a WiFi adapter takes place down in the bowels of Raspberry Pi OS.

I suggest you post your issue on the Raspberry Pi Forum when the OS gurus hang out. (actually first search it for your adapter type.)

They'll want to know all the bloody details: OS version and kernel version (and what they were previously), WiFi adapter version. If you read the moOde relnotes.txt file you'll see

Quote:################################################################################
#
# 2022-03-12 TC moOde 8.0.0
#
################################################################################

New features

- NEW: Raspberry Pi OS 11.2 (Bullseye)
- NEW: Linux kernel 5.15.23 #1525

...

which may very well explain your experience.

Regards,
Kent
