Hi all,
I bought a rotary encoder ALPS EC12E24 in a french ishop Audiophonics to build a volume knob.
My problem is how to wire it ? (on the Alps rotary there are 3 pins and ground)
I understood that I need to use GPIO 23/24
Is somewhere an electronic layout that shows how to do ?
Many thanks for Help
Best regards

It has 3 pins as most probably one is the UP, one is the DOWN, and the third is the GND...
Thinking loud, don't take me too seriously. Although this makes some sense to me.

Sorry, no. This is an encoder which outputs phased step pulses.
See the "more information" section of the product listing on Audiophonics. The InterWeb is your friend when it comes to wiring an scripting one on a Pi.

Hi All,
Thank you very much for your help and comments.
But I'm going to abandon the idea of putting a volume button on the front of my DAC. I have read all the articles but unfortunately I cannot find anything very concrete on a successful implementation.
Additionally, the rotary used by Tim (the ALPS EC12E2430804) is nowhere to be found.
Not being an electronics engineer or developer, I will have difficulty creating a solution from scratch.
Thanks again
Best Regards

Well, you're the best judge of what you are able and willing to do.
As an alternative, have you looked into USB volume controls aka volume knobs? They are a plug-n-play solution. I, for example, have a DROK brand knob I quite like. As I posted over a year ago in response to another user's query about encoders
Quote:When I was looking for a physical controller, I ended up choosing a USB Volume Control, in my case the DROK. There's a number of competitors. They present to the host USB port as an HID device. You can search this forum for old threads with subject lines like "Remote volume controls" and "Volume control by USB keyboard or volume knob" for users' discussions. My DROK has a great feel to its action.
The size of the DROK knob and its case and weight are intended to make it behave when sitting on a table or desk. There are competitors out there which as small enough they might be built into your own case as-is or one could experimenting in first removing the control's case.
There are also articles on sites such as instructables.com on building such a control and you might them helpful in thinking about how they used electrical or optical encoders.
As for using these USB controls with your moOde player, scroll down the m>Audio config screen to the Volume options section. You'll see the option to enable USB Volume knob.

Kent

Thanks for Farnell,
But one rotary is about 4 € and the shipping 14 €. Expensive for one button
