OK I had to revert to the previous version of moOde (and thus to the Pi 3)

Some more info would be helpful....  

However, if it was a Pi4 then what is the temperature/environment  ?
They get hot and throttle.... have you applied the latest firmware for Pi4 that reduces the usb3 demand and therefore temps by @5'C ?

What power supply are you using ??

Well, I put the log information at the moment when mpd stopped playing..
Other information
1) version with 4GB
2) Standard PI4 USB-C power supply
3) I applied the patch
4) I have put a heatsink (as reported above) and a fan
5) The temperature never exceeded 39 C
6) I did not experience lags while using raspbian and various applications with it

Finally, the mpd log contains  lines line these when there are the sound interruptions

I think I isolated the problem. It is related to resampling to 32 bits. For some reason I activated the resample to '32bits/*' option and this caused the silence. The blackouts do not happen (so far) with 24 bits, and with resampling disabled. Note that 24 bits to 352.4 seems to work fine even at "very high quality".

Since I have a DAC that works greatly with non-upsampled PCM, I disabled upsampling.

While playing a 24/192 file with moOde 5.4. I had a 16384 Kb buffer with a 10% minimum fill before playing. Increasing first the buffer size to 32768K, then 65535K, finally the fill to 30% made the interruptions with silence progressively more rare and shorter, but they are still there. No such problem with moOde 5.2 (I am only using mpd 0.21 there)

Final update. After I tried to run 5.4b2 on the Pi 3, I noticed no dropout. So I reverted the vl805 firmware on the Pi 4 to version 013701 and the problems seem to have disappeared. It was the new alpha firmware.

Now it is late night, and I am letting it run nearly silent (but I can notice the feeble sound drop) with a console open and "tail -f /var/log/mpd/log" running. 

Moral of the story: alpha software is alpha software.

PS: And it seems to run cooler as well with the old FW. But it is probably due to the fact that the temperature is now lower than during the day.

My Pi 4 with an attached Pimoroni heatsink runs at around 70C

Which heatsink? The 40x30mm one or a smaller one?

The point is that the RPi4 runs much hotter than previous models---seems the inevitable fate of getting more powerful chips onboard. The Internet is all atwitter at the thought that changes to the microcode will help but early indications are that this will be only marginally helpful.

I hate the thought of a fan but I'm thinking active air cooling will become necessary if I stuff one of these babies into my cabinet.

Sadly the RPi4 remains a unicorn---heard about but never seen. USA distributors have been crushed by orders. I placed two orders the day of the launch but I guess I'm already in the second or third tranche.

Nope. That’s the PWM variant. This one:

The low noise adapter is not there with this version, but it is the same as connecting to the 3V3 pin. These fans are so quiet that there is no need to buy the PWM version (that needs extra HW and SW to be added to Raspberry Pi and to the operating system). The non-PWM version is practically  inaudible while running at 3V3 (< 12Db at 75 cm of distance)
