Software vs Hardware Volume Control

What's the difference? What does one do over the other?
I'm using a HiFiBerry DAC+ PRO on one Moode box, and a HiFiBerry DAC+ Zero on the other.

Let's see what a quick 'search' turns up:

Sounds like it makes no difference.

So why is there a setting in MoOde? (Where I searched for the answer and found nothing...)

Because it can be done either way and some people prefer one, some the other? Because not all HATs support hardware volume control? Because moode is integrated into setups in different ways? For example I have my moode set to 0dB output which disables the volume control slider altogether, because volume control is done by a relay attenuator elsewhere in my system. Choice is good, my friend Smile
