just for grins, tried HifiBerry DAC again & it plays the test file w/o error.. although there is still no sound.
I swapped out the DAC & still no audio. Not sure this is really a moode config issue rather than just crummy hardware

I reseated the card again.. Preamp only applies to hifiberry DAC+ ADC and Audiophonics 9028/9038 DAC both of which have line in.
You should select Suptronics X400 from the I2S dropdown list in Audio Config then reboot.

The log shows the same empty card 0 and the WARNING message. Linux is not seeing a device.
You can also try the command below to determine whether or not Linux sees the hardware. The example is for my Boss2 I2S device. Code: pi@rp2:~ $ aplay -l
