Just so you know. the ID3v1 tag is tacked onto the end of the MP3 file.
ID3v2.x tags are placed at the beginning of the file before the MP3 data. Entirely different kettle of fish.
That message "Error: File does not contain ID3v2 tag of supported version: v2.2" is the thumbnail generator complaining that the tag in question is an ID3v2.2 tag rather that the much more common ID3v2.3 tag.
I just found out that ID3v2.2 was the version written by iTunes 5.0, so I'm not surprised to hear where your files came from.
I wish we had a program available that would weed out all questionably tagged tracks, regardless of format, so we didn't have to keep going through these exercises all the time. Spoiler alert: it's hard work to write and maintain such a program that produces neither false positives nor false negatives on rando collections.
