I and others have experimented with wireless remote controllers. If you search (or just browse) this Forum's FAQs and Guides section you'll find a number of threads which address IR-, Bluetooth-, and USB-based remote controllers. I'm fond of my own threads, of course, but plenty of other users have good ideas too.
An example of my threads: Using FLIRC and other USB input devices for remote control (I have one about the Satechi Bluetooth controller as well) and of others': Using a wireless USB Keyboard as remote control.
In the end, I stopped using these devices with moOde. A wired remote means one more tethered gadget to get tangled up or just in the way. A wireless controller means one more controller to add to the stable, at best, or get misplaced or mistaken for another, at worst. Either a touchscreen local display or a custom enclosure with built-in harware controls is the way to go IMO if you don't want to use a smart phone, tablet, or computer.
But that's just me. Different strokes for different folks.
