Basically, what you've told us so far doesn't add up to an identifiable cause.
There's nothing special about the RPi4B as far as networking is concerned. In various testing scenarios, I've booted a fresh copy of moOde on RPi3A+, RPi3B+, RPi4B, Compute Module 4, Zero W, and Zero 2W hosts. They all work in either AP mode or wired/wireless client mode on my current network with Comcast modem/router/AP whether I start with the default configuration or use the /boot/moodecfg.ini file to initialize settings. As I moved around during the previous year, I had no difficulty running with either Verizon or RCN modem/router/AP when they were my ISP.
Especially with the built-in AP mode available, I don't understand how your RPi4B remains hidden.
It will be interesting to hear what the final resolution is.

Kent

That's a marvellous phrase, I'll use that one day!
On a different tack, I have now tried Moode r761, r750 & r671 images. Same issue - no ehternet or AP connection. I also tried current [whisper it!] Volumio... same issue! There must be a clue in that for a clever person.
But Raspberry Pi OS (I used it to flash Pi 4 the firmware earlier today) and piCorePlayer both work without issue. Hmmm. To steal another phrase of yours, it will be interesting to hear what the final resolution is.

Could you attach a monitor and keyboard to Rpi4?
Other things to try:
- Force AP-Mode by writing 'None' to SSID
- Disable DHCP and manualy assign an IP Adress.

Sounds like broken hardware. Can't explain why PiCorePlayer is working on it but it's entirely different software that perhaps exercises the hardware differently enough to not cause the problem.
Perhaps there's something interesting in /var/log/syslog et al.
Do you have the legit pi4 psu? It's a power hungry beast and I had to buy it to keep my system stable.
Are you trying this with nothing plugged in (DAC etc)?
Maybe try with your router(s) switched off so there's no potentially screwy DHCP servers to mess things up (and scan for it with Fing).
With PiCorePlayer, what works - ethernet or wifi? What's the mac/ip address you're using there? Are they sensible?
The Pi4 has firmware - separate from kernel/linux/etc software, I think - it's not clear to me. Possibly you have an old/early Pi4 with old firmware? Perhaps updating that with some other os is worth a shot? https://www.raspberrypi.com/documentatio...rpi-update

Thanks for the tips. Will order a micro-HDMI cable.

Firmware was from April 2021, the update took it to July 2021 (I think it said) - I chose the stable option. The Pi 4 & PSU are brand new from Pi Hut, so reputable. I bought last week after receiving a stock alert, so likely freash off the boat? One possibility is that QC corners might be being cut at the chip factories to meet demand, however.

Thank you everybody for your ideas so far, it really is appreciated.
I keep hoping for an epiphany... or even the sudden skipped-heartbeat realization of the dumb mistake... but both are eluding me so far!

I am sure we're all applauding your perseverance..! and wracking our brains for a solution...or even a hint as to the cause.
Interesting that both MoOde and Volumio have the same hiccough....were it not for the report that you reset your router I would have queried a possible IP reservation....
You're not using a switch between the router and Pi4 by any chance ? Or a browser set for https only ?

Nope, Pi 4 is plugged directly into router. Browser not set to https only.

One more post before nigthy-nights:
I found this: https://www.jeffgeerling.com/blog/2021/r...0-stepping
My Pi 4 (2GB) has the newer ...C0T Broadcom chip. Dunno if that might make a difference here, but thought it worth a mention.
