Is it possible to have the screen display a clock when not listening?

Not with a stock player.

In principle, anything is possible if enough code is written (and integrated and tested) but in practice  nobody has put their hand up for this task.

I had the idea too, but there is at least one thing to be clarified: the definition of "not playing".

- when the playing queue becomes empty (if consume is ON) / the last song is over (if consume is OFF)?
- when you pause the player?
- when you clear the playing queue?
- after some delay, in addition to any of the above?

Moreover, should the Album-Art screen turn itself into a clock, when is the case (instead of adding a specific "screen" for the clock)?

It's nothing hard to achieve; the biggest obstacle being, as said, the definition of "not playing"...
(I think either Volumio, or another player, has such functionality, but I don't have any at hand, so cannot check)

Cheers, Al.

Yep. And then there’s the eye candy issue. What is a clock? Seems a waste to just display an incrementing set of digits. The InterWeb™ is full of examples. Have fun.

well, Moode has a clock radio function, suppose one was to build a Moode radio for the bedroom, when not in use, it could show the time on the screen

OMFG...

the farthest I went reached the good ol' '70s flip-card clocks... now we could adventure on various faceplates...

...naaah... me not wants ;-)

P.S. "InterWeb"... I smell a little sarcasm here... ;-)

That makes sense.

There is a code block in /var/www/daemon/watchdog.sh that handles "Wake on play" for locally attached displays. If a dev were interested, it could be used to do something when there is no audio output.

Of course, just use an oled screen and the CAVA installation procedure.

Am I missing something, or CAVA does not provide any clock...? As far as I know, it can show bars on screen, or provide output for other programs to take care of visualization...
