Problem: HDD not dected

Hi all . I could use some help here . I don't think it's a Moode problem 
My set up  goes like that :
Official Raspberry 3B power supply -> Raspberry zero w (running legacy 32 bit Moode  on a 64GB microSD)  <-> micro USB  male to female USB - 4 port  unbranded usb 2.0 hub (no supply) . 

The hub feeds : (1) behringer uca 202 dac , (2) kingston usb 2.0 128 GB  , (3) usb adapter stick with a micro  64GB SD , (4) a Toshiba external HDD , 1.5 T with its own power supply . 
The moment I connect the HDD to the hub I hear it wake up (accelerates rpm instantly) . Unfortunately the raspberry doesn't detect it . The HDD is about 13 years old and works perfectly on my win 11 machine . It's my entire mp3 collection back up  which I manually update once in a while . Some basic info from the zero :

Every other command I tried like , fdisk -l or parted -l show the same drives . I hoped the drive , for whatever reeason ,  will simply be unmounted . 
All other devices and the dac work ok . No problems

To be honest I had the exact same problem with volumio  on a pi 3b . It wouldn't pick up the HDD either . Never found out .

Hi spiros79,
I think is a power problem: why don't you try to disconnect everything but the hdd (directly connected to the usb male to female adapter).?

I could try that but it's a not a working solution because  I need the adapter to connect at least two devices , a hard disk drive and the dac . So I need the hub . Another solution would be to try a hub with external supply which I don,t possess nor  I have ever seen .Power supply would be a problem if I asked for the zero to spin the drive . But as long it's self powered  , power  should not be  the issue . I will also check the adapter . If it is OTG , does this mean that the pi necessarily as a host  powers the HDD through the port and leaves the power supply aside   ?

Most likely the Zero's total USB bus power is not sufficient to support the 4th connected device but as @fdealexa mentioned you should first connect just the Toshiba drive and verify that it's recognized and functions correctly.

Once thats done u could try a powered USB hub, they are readily available for example:

Also, if that hdd is 13 years old then it's living on borrowed time. I'd immediately copy all my files off of it and retire it before it self-destrucrs. Trying to revive a dead disk drive long enough to copy off irreplaceable files, even if only a few, is a tedious and often unsuccessful enterprise. Don't ask me how I know!

No luck . Drive directly connected to zero via the usb to micro usb adapter . Removed all other devices . It only detects the sdcard .
Just put an order over a powered usb hub .

The HDD is only for back up purposes. Occasionly  , I plug it in my main pc and update with latest albums etc . Then unplug it and put it out of power to rest . Very few hours on operation. Surely it's not bad .

If the drive alone  is not recognized then the issue is something other than power since you mentioned that its "a Toshiba external HDD , 1.5 T with its own power supply".

A powered USB hub is still a device I'd try.

Experiences vary with the lifetime of a hard drive, with too many variables to model it easily. The industry convention is to say 3-5 years based on tens of thousands of units but that's for drives in more strenuous service than an occasional backup.

I've had hard drives last 6-10 years and I've had hard drives fail in various ways, some partial failure, some catastrophic, both sooner and later.

First (and last) rule of data storage: don't put all your eggs in one basket!

I agree . My collection sits in one   3T WD drive in my Win 11 . And the external Toshiba acts as a back up . If anyone breaks , it's replaced immediately .  Honestly , in 20 years hardly remember any drives gone bad . I mostly change them to move to larger capacities .
