Hi,
In some few specific cases I am not able to show the cover, moode audio prompts the 'Cover art not found' message even if the 'Cover.jpg' file is available.
The issue affects only the folders that include APE and WV audio files, while the covers related to the MP3, M4A and FLAC folders are fairly displayed.
A Thumbnail Generator -> Regenerate command didn't help.
The issue seems quite recent, because the covers failed to appear only few weeks ago, but I cannot report the latest moode audio version ables to display covers correctly.
Moreover the 'Date' information is not available for the APE and WV audio files, even if the 'YEAR' tag field is filled.
Could I have corrupted some settings? Any suggestion to fix the above issues?

Hi,
this is a topic I have been investigating for a long time; so I'd like some more information:
1. did the files not showing the picture / date NOW show the same data in past versions of moOde, or are they new APE / WV files added recently?
2. can you see the metadata in question (picture / date) when examining the very same files with other (on Windows / Mac / Linux) players / metadata editors?
3. can you run the following command (you need to SSH into the Pi for doing this):
mediainfo <one of the problematic files of your choice>
and produce its results? You should see something like the following, just for you to know what to look at:
(note also, the amount of information, especially in the first chunk - General, may be less)

Thank you for your prompt reply.
1. The files currently not showing the picture nor the date shown picture in past versions of moOde, but I was never able to see date.
2. Yes, I can see date metadata when examining the concerned files with Mp3tag tool. I cannot see the picture as metadata because I usually remove it from each audio file and I move it to the Cover.jpg file.

Indeed there is no picture in the metadata tag. The fact you cannot see the date is weird, though, as it is there.
If you can share 2 or 3 of them somewhere, and post a link (by PM) to me, @ Tim Curtis and @ TheOldPresbyope would help for investigation. One of us will look into them.

As the metadata is in the files, have you set the ThumgGen preference to scan for All files?

That could be it.
Menu, Preferences, Library
Thumbgen scan
Specify which audio formats are scanned by the thumbnail generator. Selecting "Default" can result in a faster scan.
Default: aac, aiff, dff, dsf, flac, m4a, mp3, mp4, ogg, wav and wv.
All: All audio formats listed in the output of the MPD -V command.
Plus: The + option adds image types jpg/jpeg, png, tif/tiff to the scan which enables thumbnails to be generated for images in parent folders of the Album folder for example Artist or CD box set images. NOTE: Incorrect thumbnails may appear in the Library if the Album folder also contains image files and "Cover search priority" is set to Embedded
It might be an improvement to break out the Thumbnail generation options into a separate Preferences section.

Thank to the steve4star's suggestion, I have changed the Menu, Preferences, Library, Thumbgen scan option from Default to All and now the missed covers related to the APE and WV audio files are again available.
The date info is still missed, however I have to fix my initial report because the lack of date affects only the APE audio files, no issues with the WV ones.

Hi all,
I had a quick look at the files Pier Federico sent over, they both (Monkey's Audio .ape and WavPack .wv) utilize the APE tag, and it seems that MPD is not looking for the "correct" tag into it (that is: "correct" in the APE tag is a meaningless word, as there is no standard, nor standardized set of field names, so one may just wild guess...)
When converting them to flac using ffmpeg I get the date in a (non-standard in the Vorbis comment used by flac) field named "YEAR", all caps; which suggests that APE tag uses "YEAR" as field name.
Please note, that mediainfo presents the date (on both formats) in the "Recorded date" field, the same carrying the date for flac files, so internally is performing some sort of mapping...
The covers are just missing, but I remember them working fine with the ape and wv files I have stumbled upon in the past, before deciding to convert them all to flac and eventually fix the metadata by hand...

As an aside, mediainfo is untrustworthy if one wants/needs to know exactly the names of each metadata field in a file. I never developed a mapping table but it became obvious to me early on that it maps certain values to "common" names.
There are other programming tools which show what actually is entered n the metadata block but mediainfo is still a handy utility for what we use if for because it knows about so many formats.

Ok, I've now had a look at the sample files.
The metadata in the .ape tracks is contained in a block at the end delimited by "APETAGEX", which is correct for APEv2 tagging, and the date field we're interested in is named "Year" as Al surmised.
The world of music metadata is a swamp. As best I have been able to determine, "Year" is accepted by a number of software apps as denoting in APEv2 what "TDAT" denotes in ID3v2 (example: MP3) and what "DATE" denotes in Vorbis (example: FLAC). This is even shown explicitly in the Tag Mapping Table used by MusicBrainz's Picard.
Apparently the APE decoder in MPD doesn't agree. Here's the metadata contained in the MPD database for one of the .ape sample files which is tagged with the Year 1970:

The best approach, albeit the most arduous, is to get the MPD devs to agree and adjust its decoder. (I've been down that route before. It's possible to prevail but it takes stamina.) Alternatively, one might try hacking to find out what the current APE decoder expects and adjust the track files appropriately. (This doesn't appeal to me.) My personal approach would be to transcode everything to FLAC and fix the metadata there.
Interesting music, by the way.
