Thanks Al.....but confusion still rife for me!
I've done "m" => Configure => Library, then pressing the button [create] Music source.
....and created 3 Music sources ....those being my drives that are local to the Pi.
All 3 can be seen in My PC.....but can't be written to.
Couple things.
1. The "Music Source" screen is only used when the files to be accessed are on another computer in your network.
2. For files on the Pi itself either on the uSD card or USB drives plugged into the Pi you simply do Menu, Update Library.
3. When you turn on the SMB server in System Config it enables files on the Pi to be accessible from another computer on your network.
If you want to keep the USB drives plugged into the Pi then:
- Remove the Music Sources
- Menu, Update library
If you want to keep the USB drives plugged into your PC then:
- On the Pi remove the existing Music Sources
- On your PC create "share" for the folder on each drive that contains your music files
- On the Pi create an SMB Music Source for each "share"
Usually the SCAN will find the shares but not always. In this case post back.

Thanks Tim....just to clarify(eek)....music drives remain attached to Pi....files transferred FROM master drive on PC.
Have created a Samba Share folder on PC....named ADATA (moode (Moode SMB Server))can view files contained therein!
Going to the Pi.....I scan to find what I believe to be a local source....in this case MOODE/ADATA
....don't think I'm there yet.

If this is true, then

OF COURSE it is a local source. It is on the Pi, and you shared it so your PC can read/write files to it. This is how shared folder are meant to work:
- one computer shares a folder
- other computes see it
- the computer that shared it, still sees it as a local folder, because IT IS a local folder to it.

Exactly.....problem is that the shared folder can't be written to ...as I said back in post#4
If I could remove write protection....then Bingo...but I can't.
Suppose it comes down to enabling WRITE on that shared folder??

Nope, if you do as we do, you get R/W access straight away.
Can you try with root as user, and the password you set for whatever the user in your Pi is...?

Thanks!
I've stuck with pi and moodeaudio....
try with root as user.....so enter sudo -s in SSH window?
Then....now have : root@moode:/home/pi#......not sure what to do with this?

No. as user/password as the credentials required when you connect to the share from your windows PC.

.....used same....pi and moodeaudio
They seemed to be the obvious choice of 'credentials'........??

Hmm,
I kindly ask you IF YOU CAN TRY to use root / moodeaudio. Not what you have done, or think it is obvious.

Hi Al....perhaps I'm giving the wrong impression here!
When initially asked to put in credentials...yesterday....I used pi/moodeaudio because that was all I had.
So....I'm to use root/moodeaudio as user/password combination....right, I get that now.
Problem now is.....that I'm not being offerred the chance to input new credentials as you've suggested.
How can I make the PC forget credentials...and ask me for new ones?
