pi 3B+, 4, 5
#1
hopefully this hasn't been asked a billion times...

I have my pi 3B+ running great - so great that I want to build another for an old Zenith 1963 console to add moOdeAudio capabilities to it.

I looked at a pi zero 2w but I like ethernet ports vs wifi (especially if I mount it in a metal case), and the USB ports seem a bit limited on the zero having only one usb mini(micro?).

So pi 3B+, 4, 5.  What are the advantages going with 5 vs 4?  4 vs 3 I get that the USB 3 might make a big deal.... other than that?
And memory?  Doesn't seem like too much is needed is the zero runs fine at 512mb.   1G?  2G?

My 3B+ has been great - Im guessing heat isnt too much of an issue (with any of them) with the relatively low processing being done, correct?

Yes, it has been asked before, and the answer is "it depends". Zero if you need the form factor, 3a is good if slightly smaller is desirable, 3b is more than enough to run moOde perfectly well, 4 gives more headroom for faster scans and more DSP processing if you need that but uses more power/runs hotter, 5 adds even more bells at the cost of more power/heat. 512 is plenty memory.

Get the Pi-5 w/official cooler and PSU.

- Option for ultra low Idle power at shutdown means you never have to pull the plug.
- Super convenient power button
- No HDMI or DSI display issues as we have with the Pi3
- PCIe port for attaching NVMe or SATA controllers

Did not think about the power button - that would be super nice:  are there points in the moode exit (or pi 5 exit?) that could run a py script to say something like "shutdown complete" on a display etc?

And the NVMe is interesting.

When you say "shutdown complete" do you mean the Pi has reached hardware shutdown is is in its "idle" state?

"in idle" probably would be difficult, just something to say that "moOde" has completed exiting or something.  Doesn't have to be perfect just call an "exit" message or something.  Not a big deal - I could probably poke around the scripts a bit.

What does moOde do when the pi5 goes to into idle? shut down or sleep or ?

Pi5 idle state means complete hardware shutdown. A power on is needed to start the hardware up and reload the OS into memory fresh. It's not a sleep state like on desktop or mobile platforms.

AFAIK the only way to determine when hardware shutdown is complete is via the power LED. Red means shutdown is complete.
