Problem: DSD not playing
#1
hi
Using 7.5.0 with raspberry pi 3 b+, hifiberry digi+ pro.
DSD are supposed to be converted on the fly to PCM, but they are not playing, mpd just stops and the beginning of the file, and nothing happens.
I have tried hw and plughw output modes.
I have tried software or fixed volume...

I also tried direct output through USB to Teac A-H01 amp.

I've searched a lot in this forum. I had already the issue a few monthes ago, it was supposed to be solved in next versions, but the same things still happens...

Thanks

When you say "it was supposed to be solved in next versions," can you provide a link to that discussion?

Sure Tim!

BTW I put mpd to verbose log mode, and I get this:
Nov 16 04:56 : exception: Failed to open "ALSA Default" (alsa); Error opening ALSA device "_audioout"; snd_pcm_hw_params() failed: Invalid argument

May be it could help in solving the issue.
I've been using moode for years now, with the same hardware, and DSD were playing great before. I'm not sure when it began to fail. I have made several clean installs every few monthes.

Thanks

Try setting ALSA output mode to "Direct (hw)" in Audio Config.

This is already the current mode! (BTW, I've switched between both modes several times).

Its not obvious to me what could be happening. DSD files play fine on my DAC's over both USB and I2S interfaces and at native, DoP or PCM on-the fly. I don't have your particular device though and so not able to try and repro.

@Tim Curtis

Notice that the first post included the line "I also tried direct output through USB to Teac A-H01 amp."

This suggests the OP's issue doesn't specifically involve the HiFiBerry device.

In my case, playing DSD material to a PCM-only Creative Tech USB-BT adapter succeeds only if I switch output mode to "Direct (hw)" *AND* turn off the DSP Crossfeed option which I had enabled for my BT headphones.

Aside: I know a lot about Unix/Linux but I'm a dilettante when it comes to Linux audio plumbing; I just keep pushing buttons until the music spills out.

@domisolfr

If you have enabled any DSP options, try turning them off.

Kent

Thanks Tim, Thanks Kent, both for your help.

Finally what I did is create a fresh install of version 7.5.0 again, and all is working now, both with USB and hifiberry digi+ pro.

It's sad that volume is not taken into account after on the fly PCM conversion, which means DSF are played at max volume.

Could this be treated as a feature request Tim?

Quick test and no problems with volume on my end.

Tim, seems you have harware volume control, I was referring about software volume (after PCM on the fly conversion)...
